North Riding is terribly boring. Not many cool cafes like Linden or vibey bars like Fourways, so we were pleasantly surprised when we unassumingly popped into Blandford Manor one day. We were extremely hungry after a hike and not keen on the usual places so we stopped at the closest restaurant we could think of. I had been, once before, for a Valentines dinner but the candle light completely shrouded the beauty of this place and the meal that night did not blow me away. So I’m glad that we gave this place a second chance.
This restaurant is so peaceful and serene. We feel so relaxed sitting under the trees on the sprawling lawns. The grass is so lush and green and just makes us happy. The peacefulness, however, does not come without controversy. Last year Blandford Manor decided to ban kids which angered alot of parents. We do not have kids so we really can not comment on the dynamics, all we know is that if you need somewhere to enjoy a meal and feel like you are in a secret garden, this is is it.
The tables are far enough from each other that you dont have to listen to other peoples conversations and if you are lucky you can be seated next to the little river. It is just the perfect setting for an afternoon meal although I imagine breakfast would also be a treat in such a nice setting. The service is strange. The waiters seem a little confused and laid back. They could do with a little pep in their step but it didn’t bother us too much because when you come to a place like this you aren’t really in a hurry to leave anyway.
They have a varied menu but we have already found our favorite meal and it will definitely keep us coming back. So what is this amazing meal? A chicken pie! A simple enough dish but one that not many restaurants get right. This one is served in a rectangular dish so that you get a huge amount of the glorious filling and it is capped with light buttery pastry. Its perfectly seasoned and just rich enough to make you want more but not so much that you feel ill after. We are besotted and cant wait till we get to eat it again. We have tried the beef one, which was good but did not shine like the chicken version.
The cocktails are also really good. The margarita is perfect with just a hint of sweet and salty and not the artificial tasting kind that has become so common.
This really is an awesome haven in the middle of suburbia. We have seen a lot of mixed reviews about Blandford Manor and Wild Goose Cafe which almost made us not come but we are glad we did. We have found many things to love about this spot and will keep coming back.
